Advanced Techniques: CRST (2)
Computational Remote Sensing Technology
Computational Remote Sensing Technology (CRST) is a worldly leading advanced technology of highly performing scientific calculation in diverse infrastructure application. The term CRST in terminology was initially proposed by Dr. Carl Jiang. Figure 4 offers a profile of how to approach to different targets at initial stage.
More introductions of advanced techniques and their applications have been demonstrated in individual subsections.
New Concept of GIS
A big picture of connecting remote sensing to sub-science and engineering is given in Figure 1. However, the scape and contents of Geographical Information System (GIS) should be altered and refined.
The traditional definition of GIS is limited. A lot of gained data are only used to be displayed in maps as its final target. That leads to a fact that the course works designed by universities only require students to fluently handle some commercial packages such as ArcGIS, ENVI without knowing other knowledge.
In fact, by means of digital data transfer, remote sensing technology have brought multi-discipline together because the investigated objects are located on the surface of the earth. Hence, according to many diverse practices, although the individual Infrastructure science and engineering classified by traditional scape of discipline has own feature, they inter-correlate with others under a big frame of Geographical Information System (GIS) (see Figure 2 to 3).
With fast development of remote sensing technology and high requirement of infrastructure applications, it requires ones must know
1. Principle of remote sensing, which contains a lot of hidden advanced knowledge
2. Many micro-processes (mechanisms), most important knowledge is located in the field of quantum mechanics and chemistry. Depending on which substance is investigated, many other subjects such as electrochemistry, thermodynamics are also involved into.
3. Advanced programming, thus only knowing high-level language programming in IT is not enough to deal with some cases because most data are stored in binary files. Hence, some knowledge of machine lanuage may be also needed.
4. Perform advanced scientific calculation. It usually happens in the process of providing various technical services in Infrastructure applications associated with science and engineering relying on advanced mathematical and special knowledge of one field. Unfortunately, the functionalities of scientific calculation in the popular commercial packages such as ArcGIS and ENVI are very weak, therefore it can be performed in other scientific calculation environment by means of data transfer.
5. …
In short, the scale and contents in the new concept of GIS made by remote sensing and its infrastructure applications are very large and rich. They employ massive interdisciplinary knowledge in practice.
